Ultrasound Test Information
About your ultrasound:
Ultrasounds are meaningful for studying internal organs, such as the heart, liver, blood vessels or other soft tissue. This is a non-invasive procedure which uses ultra-high frequency sound waves and creates an image from the resulting echoes. We are pleased to offer this service for your convenience in our office.
How to prepare for your ultrasound procedure:
See the exam below for which you are scheduled and see instructions which apply to you:
Abdominal Ultrasound (20 min.):
Please do not eat or drink anything (no gum or candy) 6-8 hours prior to the exam. Drink plenty of clear fluids and avoid fatty foods the day prior to exam.
Renal/Retroperiotoneal or Pelvic Ultrasound (20 min.):
No dietary restrictions, drink fluids and be hydrated. Pelvic only: Patient must complete drinking 32 oz of water one hour prior to the exam- do not empty bladder once you start drinking.
Abdominal & Pelvic Ultrasound (40 min.):
Please do not eat food (no candy or gum) 6-8 hours prior to the exam. Patient must complete drinking 32 oz of water one hour prior to exam. (No other liquids - water only). Patient should not empty bladder once they have started drinking.
Renal Artery Duplex (30 min.):
Patient should take over-the-counter medication containing Simethicone (examples are "GAS-X" or "PHAZYME"), which can be purchased at any local pharmacy. Take 3 mylicon pills: 2 the night before exam and 2 an hour before the scan with 8 oz of water. Take the instructed dosage after mealtime the evening prior to exam. Try to avoid fatty foods and carbonated liquids the day
prior to your exam and drink plenty of clear fluids.* Please do not eat or drink anything 12 hours prior to the exam.
*You must be able to hold your breath for 5 second intervals.
Abdominal Aorta/IVC Duplex Ultrasound (30 min.):
Please do not eat or drink anything 6-8 hours prior to exam. Drink plenty of clear fluids and avoid fatty foods the day prior to exam.
The following list of ultrasound procedures DO NOT require the patient to do any special preparation for their ultrasound.
Upper/Lower Extremity Arterial Ultrasound - Please wear a short sleeve shirt with pants or skir. No long johns, dresses or panty hose.
Upper/Lower Extremity Venous Ultrasound
Breast Ultrasound (Note: please bring a copy of your most recent mammogram and/or breast ultrasound)
NOTE: Never withhold medications. You may drink enough water to swallow tablets. If diabetic, you may eat something light as needed. Call our office if you have questions.
